Ce dimanche 26 octobre, la Matter Studio Gallery, dans le quartier de Mid-City à Los Angeles, accueille le vernissage de l’artiste-peintre québécois Sylvain Latendresse pour son exposition « Ephemeral Matter ». À travers une série d’œuvres vibrantes et contemplatives, l’artiste explore la beauté des paysages, notamment californiens, où lumière, nature et mouvement se transforment en matière et en émotion. For Los Angeles-based painter Sylvain Latendresse, art has always been more than a career; it’s a way of being.
Born in Jonquiere and raised in Lévis, Québec, Sylvain credits his early connection to nature and light to the Canadian artists who first inspired him: Jean-Paul Riopelle, Paul-Émile Borduas, and the Group of Seven. Their influence laid the groundwork for a lifelong journey of visual exploration.

Educated in Montreal, Latendresse earned both a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and a Master’s in Art History from UQAM, where he wrote his thesis on Joseph Beuys. “Art appeared as a natural way of being,” he recalls. “Montreal became my home, where I met and collaborated with many other artists.”
L’artiste Sylvain Latendresse, originaire de Lévis, a récemment présenté une de ses toiles nommée Grassland dans le cadre d’une exposition virtuelle organisée par l’Association des artistes de Los Angeles. L’exposition intitulée Habitual a pour but de promouvoir les artistes de la région de Los Angeles en amassant des fonds pour soutenir l’association, dont M. Latendresse fait partie. Par Elizabeth Cyr
Un aspect de son art qui le démarque est le fait qu’il n’utilise pas de pinceaux pour réaliser ses tableaux. Il utilise plutôt ce qu’on appelle le couteau, ce qui donne de la texture à ses œuvres inspirées des multiples paysages qu’il voit en Californie, où il réside avec son épouse.
«Tu peux retrouver les montagnes, la forêt, la mer, le désert, donc il y a vraiment de tout», souligne-t-il.
M. Latendresse se base directement sur des photographies qu’il prend de la nature qui l’inspire, pour ensuite les réaliser sans croquis sur ses canevas. Son œuvre Grassland s’inspire d’ailleurs de la route entre Los Angeles et San Francisco. Cette façon de travailler lui permet d’interpréter la nature librement et de représenter une vision idéaliste de celle-ci, notamment par les couleurs qu’il utilise. "Sylvain Latendresse has put aside any anxiety about following “outdated” models. In fact, by engaging methods of painting derived and presented over a century ago as a contemporary experience of art – and the human experience the art reflects and celebrates – Latendresse moves past the issue of anachronism and towards the matter of revivalism. He returns specifically to the coloristic and structural experiments of late 19th-century post- Impressionism – French pointillism and fauvism and German expressionism most notably – is in itself a gesture of defiance, asserting the primacy of art history over the fleeting tastes of any contemporary audience."

"Based on places in central California that the artists knows and loves, the landscapes comprising “California Nature, Unseen” are dreamlike and sometimes surreal. These enchanted vistas continue the tradition of California landscape painting in a bold, contemporary way. They are realized with rich and often Fauvist colors – including a masterful use of yellow and purple hues – and scintillating dappled textures. Latendresse paints only with palette knives, and the rich swaths of acrylic paint put forth a tactile quality suggesting you are physically entering into the spaces he has imagined."
